If we were those people.....

This would have been our Christmas Card.

Or this one....

or this one.

Rockin' Around....

The Christmas Tree!

This is the first tree we have had in six years. Not too bad. It only took us a week to finish. I think we both forgot how to put up a tree! Looks like we are going to have to hit the after Christmas sales for more ornaments. Works for now though!
Merry Christmas!!

Im terrible at this!

I am terrible at keeping up with this blogging business. Maybe I will make that my new year's resolution!

So I was going to go day by day about Europe, but there truly is too much to tell. I know it was only 5 days, but what glorious fun-filled 5 days it was.

So that was September. We took a little weekend trip to Alabama. Note to self, Friday, Saturday Sunday is not enough time to make that trip!

October we celebrated Zachary's first year of life. What an amazing little boy. I cannot believe the progress he has made. He has definitely exceeded everyone's expectations. He transitioned in to full fledge walking in a week. One day crawling, next walking. I have never seen a kid walk that fast. October was so busy. We ended the month at an indoor water park in Ohio. Those are so much fun and a nice break from the cold weather here.

November = new experiences. We went on our first cruise ever over the week of Thanksgiving. We were on the Disney cruise line's Magic. First Class all the way. I have never been so catered to. I highly recommend to the following people, couples with NO children, or couples with children ages 4/5 - 15. They have so much for the kids to do that you the parents get a vacation as well as your kids. No guilt. I was told by many of the parents that we met at the "adult only pool" (their kids were off having their own fun) that their kids beg every year to come back. Some only see their kids for sleeping, and one meal per day. The one meal is because the parents tell their kids that have to meet for dinner every day. It is safe and structured.

We went with parents of a 4 year old, 18 month old and a one year old. They have a nursery for under 3 that you can put your kids in. There is a cost involved, but luckily we had a hook-up on the boat! Ms. Shannon, Kim's cousin is what I called a 3 stripe (pretty high ranking for a cruise ship). April had fun, but some days it was more difficult for her. However when we departed Cape Canaveral for the Airport to come home she was saying "goodbye cruise ship, goodbye Mickey, goodbye Cinderella, goodbye goofy pool.......you get the picture. It was very cute.
A shot of our ship. These things are huge!

The Eastern Carribbean was glorious, but reality is we are back home. It is 17 degrees outside. Cold sweet cold.

Day One

So our adventure began Thursday evening. Our flight left at 5:35pm from Detroit. We booked our flight more than a month ago and picked our seats. This was a very large plane seating almost 300 passengers. It was fairly booked, however there were seats near the back that were 2 together in the middle. The plane narrowed towards the back allowing this. We were thrilled to have "Only" two seats together each of us. HOWEVER days prior a lovely friend of ours informed of us of a webiste.....seatguru.com. Here you can check your seat and it will tell you if it is good or not. So I thought ok, I'll check it out. Well to my surprise their seat diagram didn't match the one on the airline's website. So I figured the "third party" site was wrong. WRONG!! So we board the plane as I get close to my seat.....I realize we are in a row of three and who is sitting in the third seat? Why of course the largest Samoan on the planet. Literally at that moment I wanted to get off the plane. ME squished between my lovely husband (who is not small) and the largest Samoan on the planet for 7.5 hours! Kim could see the Panic in my face. She and Mark were very lucky and their seats were a set of two. What friends they are and offered us their seats, but really, how could I take her seats? So I sucked it up said, "no we'll be fine" and sat with my elbows touching for about 5 hours. The final two hours I made Greg switch with me. That was a sight!!
We landed in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We had a short layover, which was great because we had to enter through customs here. This is where we got our one and only European stamp. It isn't the way it used to be. Now because of the EU, going across borders it simple and doesn't require custom checks and the multiple "stamps" in your passport.
From Amsterdam it was a short flight to Paris. No large Samoans thank goodness!
So our plan was to sleep as much as possible on the plane so that we could hit the streets of Paris immediately. Paris is 6 hours ahead (Eastern time, 7 hours ahead Central) so we would arrive first thing in the morning. Well....
We get off the plane head directly for the 'metro'. This was to take us into one of the major train stations in Paris which happened to be blocks from our hotel. The first lovely sight we saw in Paris were armed guards, armed with AK47s. These huge rifles laid across their chests, very intimidating.
We grab our train and head into the city. Here is where we experienced our first native "Parisians". No one, NO ONE, spoke to us. I guess I should have figured that, the French hate Americans. On the way we saw rabbits on the side of the tracks. I told Greg that they look the same in France as they do in America. He piped in with a "what, no Beret and cigarette?" (with a French accent of course!). I found myself saying oh look their.....looks just like ours. I guess i didn't know what to expect!
We make it into the Gare de Lyon and out into the streets of Paris. What a sight. All of the cars are little teeny tiny cars. Nothing bigger than a Ford Focus. Many vespas and motor scooters too. It was odd to see.
Our first encounter with anyone was this little French woman and her baby carriage. Poor thing, we scared her to death. Picture Greg (6'3") Mark (6'6") with Kim and I (not short by any means) and then this little bitty French woman pushing her baby carriage. I think she almost had a heart attack. The exchange was pretty funny. Our English, her terrible broken Frenglish.

Once she realized we were harmless she got the attention of another local and together they pointed us into the direction of our hotel. Off we went to find out our rooms were ready. Here is where I have to say instead of sticking to our plans, we all took showers and collapsed for 2 hours. What a great idea that it was though. During these two hours while we recharged our batteries Paris had rain! Once awake from our naps we hit the streets.
We walked about 8 miles that afternoon. Seeing everything that we possibly could. We even took a night cruise down the Seine. What a wonderful first day in Europe!
Notre Dame

We went to Europe...for the weekend!

So we finally made it "across the pond". What a whirlwind weekend we had. It was fabulous. We were so lucky to be with our great friends Mark and Kim. Kim a seasoned European traveler, was fabulous on getting us where we wanted/needed to go so that we could just "look". What a difference it must make having someone maneuver the streets while your eyes are everywhere else. Although I did make sure that I understood the train schedules, airport and cabbie lingo and where we were in relation to the map just in case the next time we go we may not have our tour guide.

We have 1,500 pictures. I am not joking. I think it is just shy of that number around 1,470. Greg and I have sifted through the first 1,000 and forgot to delete and move good ones around. We were reminiscing already! Our initial plans were to visit only Paris and Rome, however because of Kim's savvy ways, we were able to fit in her "city" Florence. What a city it is! I totally can see why she says that the city speaks to her. While we were overlooking the city with the sun setting, I couldn't help but get tears in my eyes. It was absolutely gorgeous.

So for my two fans out there (Mom and Susan) I will do this in parts. Trying to give you my take on our fabulous trip one day at a time, beginning with the shocked look on my face as we entered the plane!! Enjoy....

To go on vacation or not? That WAS the question

Well here it is the post where i get to tell the sob story that yet again we cancelled the European vacation of our dreams. I really just think that Europe doesn't want us! Or, maybe the third time is a charm. We took the responsible path and decided since our main sorce of income was not working AND the company was in bankruptcy it might be smart to sit this one out and wait. While we feel it all is going to work out, we just couldn't stomach the idea of 3 weeks on the other side of the world and Greg's job in balance. Could you really enjoy your vacation when all you can think about is the fact that your job may not be there when you get back. I couldn't, so we decided since we had insurance and it covers "job loss" we should just use the insurance and try again down the road. All I can say is thank goodness for trip insurance. I highly recommend it to anyone planning an expensive vacation. With that said, we will see Italy....date TBD.

So with Greg at home for the last couple of weeks work has progressed around the house. We are prepping for our "Housewarming Party" as the southerns call it or "Open House" as the northeners say on July 18th. In addition we are anxiously awaiting my parents to visit. We have an ETA of "just before the party". Can't get much more than that, but I will take it. We plan to spend a few days for the 4th of July down there. So if I have to I will tie them up and throw them in the back of the truck and bring them back with us!! Who wouldn't want to come to Michigan in June? and stay through July and August. NO humidity, 75 glorious degrees and 9pm (or later) sunsets. Summers here are worth the winters we have to endure.

Ok, so on to the changes here. We have installed new interior lighting, built the downstairs bar (waiting for counter tops to be installed next week), installed new fixtures in half bath and pairtially painted it and worked on the exterior landscaping. Oh, and finally unpacked the office boxes. That was an entire days worth of work right there. Still so much to do and not enough hours in the day. I just don't know how people get settled into their homes so quickly. We have been here for nearly 8 months and still have so much more to do. Greg is more than likely going back to work on June 29th. Figures, that is the week we had scheduled to go to Alabama. But he has a job to go back to, at least for now.

Took 4 people to hang. I was a nervous wreck

Before paint and counters. Can't figure out what color to paint entire basement. Any ideas?

Hold your horses...

I know....parents, I need to update.
New post to come soon!

Finally Some Good News!!

First of all I totally forgot to post the link for Mark and Kim with Baby Zach:
kimandmark.us Here you can post comments and see the dramatic change in Zach. He already looks so different! They are finally home and doing great.

We found out today that Greg's layoff is "temporary" and that the "new contract changes" haven't yet taken effect, therefore Greg will get paid most of his wages during the layoff. Whew. So....Europe here we come!! Hooray for good news!!

On top of that, he is at home everyday playing "house-husband" so laundry's going, dishes are getting washed and projects are getting accomplished! Wow, to have 2 months off to get things done and get paid, what a dream! I wish I could be there too, however I am just a phone call away :)
I seem to be able to direct the workforce over the phone quite well!

So that is our refreshing news for now. Keep fingers crossed that when Chrysler turns into Fiat the transition will be smooth and Greg will continue to have a job.

Update

Zach is doing as well as can be expected. And right smack dab in the middle of it all...he is cutting a tooth! Poor Guy. Please read here to get details and make comments. Even if you don't know them, they appreciate the kind words and thought. Its a distraction in the middle of the night for them to read.

On another note we have had so much loss recently with close friends and family loosing loved ones. Most recently my brother -in-law Roger lost his Aunt last night unexpectedly. Just want to let them know we are thinking about them and sending lots of love from Michigan. Please keep them all in your prayers.

I will be glad when our post turns into a happy post...Greg was laid off today. Hopefully for no more than 60 days. What a turmoil we will be in if it is long term. Please keep us in your prayers as well. Maybe it really isn't in the cards for us to go to Europe after all?!!

I will try to find happy news to share tomorrow. So much doom and gloom a person can take and share! Love to all.

Our Godson Zachary

Hello blogworld. Is there really anyone out there? I am calling on anyone and everyone who may possibly read this to take a moment and say a prayer for our Godson Zachary. On day 2 of his little life his wonderful pediatrician saw something in him that just didn't look normal. Two months later it would be confirmed that he suffers from a condition called craniosynostosis. Although he suffers from the lesser of the three types, no doubt this is still scary for everyone. He will undergo an 8 hour surgery on Wednesday, April 29th. I won't go into the exact details just know that it is evasive and a long road of recovery for not only him, but his mom, dad and big sis. We have known about the surgery for about 6 weeks now, however now that it is looming everyone is struggling. Our little Zach is only 6 months. He is without a doubt the happiest baby I have ever been around. I think when he cries he is still smiling and crying is a rarity (although I am not there at night !!).

So...with that said I am calling in all favors, which i know no one owes me anything, so I guess that means I owe all of you. We need prayers. We have faith in God everything will be smooth with no complications and that his recovery will be swift. We will keep everyone posted on his condition however feel free to visit their blog: http://www.kimandmark.us/

So please if you have a moment say a little prayer for me today. I am on my way to the hospital in 10 minutes and my nerves are starting to get the best of me! While your at it throw one in for Greg, he has to take care of me!

Double Life

Apparently Saturday night I was in two places at once. My good friend Kim who is also my boss retrieved a voice mail from her phone Sunday night that went a little something like this:
"Hey Gina, its Ron. Just thought I would call and say hey. Give me a call xxx-xxx-xxxx." So my "boss" calls me and asks if I know a Ron. Of course I say no and she proceeds to tell me about the voice mail. So I take the # and give "Ron" a call. This was the conversation:

R: Hello?
Me: Hi, this is Gina Strychar I am trying to reach a Ron?
R: This is Ron.
Me: Who are you?
R: Who is this?
Me: Gina
R: Oh, hey Gina, remember me, we met at the bar last night.
Me: WHAT!?!?!
R: Yeah, don't you remember we met last night at the bar.
Me: NO. We didn't meet at the bar last night.
R: Yeah we did, this is Regina right?
Me: No, this is Gina, just plain Gina. I think that someone gave you a fake phone number.
R: What?
Me: The cell # that you called happens to be my boss who happens to be very married with two kids. I myself am married and my husband is sitting right here beside me.
R: Who's married?
Me: The women who's cell phone you called today. Her name is Kim, she is my boss and you asked for me on her cell phone. As a matter of fact I was at her house last night. I was not at any bar. I am afraid that whoever you met gave you a fake number. Sorry to be the one to have to tell you that. ( Here I am laughing uncontrollably). Better luck next time.
R: Okay, thanks.

This by far had to be the strangest coincidental thing to ever happen to me. What are the chances that this "women" gave out my friend's number to some random, might I add very gay sounding guy and he happened to ask for a Gina?

So the big question around here is "So, Gina... what have YOU been up to lately?"

Gas or Charcoal?

Ok dad now when you come up next month you will have a choice. You like?

Snowing Again!

We had a lovely visit from my cousin Max (aka: Bilo) and his lovely wife Tif-fa-fa, that is until his allergies started to bother him from our 3 furry friendly cats. Not too long after they had left, with the temperature dropping, it has now decided to start snowing! Granted it's not sticking to the ground, none the less IT IS SNOWING!

New Toys

Finally....our New Year's resolution is here...in March!! I took that long to research and pick what we were looking for, then waiting on the delivery and setup took almost a month. But they are finally here and are ready for use. Now I need about another week and some physical therapy, so my boss says, to get the ankle back to normal. For those who don't know I slipped and fell on some ice back at the end of February and severely sprained my ankle. This is the same ankle that I broke many years ago and had surgery on. I really think that this sprain hurt much worse than that break, but then too I was 16 and now I am .....well, I am older! Anyways we are looking forward to some MUCH needed exercise in this household. We just found out that Greg's 15 year....YES 15 YEAR, high school reunion is this summer. We both would like to loose some pounds prior to. Wish us luck. When we get into a routine we will let you know how the weight loss is going. However I don't know about down south, but up here in the north, those little monsters, aka girl scouts, are EVERYWHERE selling those stinking cookies. Relentless I tell you!! I think they are being molded for future sales positions. Anyways, here are our new toys.

Will it ever stop?!?!?!?!?

This is what we saw outside of our kitchen window this morning. It was acutally snowing harding than this, but we couldn't get the camera out in time! That's the way it always goes right? Hope it is warmer where you are. We sure are counting down the days to warmer weather. Enjoy!

Remedy?

So, the office has passed around a cold that I have been fortunate enough to only "carry" home to Greg. However this morning I woke up to the wonderful gift of catching it. I thought I had won the battle.

Anyways, which is it? Starve a cold, feed a fever....or Starve a fever, feed a cold?

Surprise Snow!

On Saturday morning we woke up to a fresh 3 inches of snow on the ground. The lovely weather guys totally missed this one, so it was such a surprise. All of the previous snow had melted and we actually thought we were close to calling the snow done! I guess mother nature has other plans.
Well our good friends called us up and asked if we would like to go sledding and as you can tell from the video below we said yes. In my defense I was getting shoved down the giant hill and was completely terrified. The sad thing is that the 3, almost 4 year old was doing this by herself. I'm pathetic I know!

It's COLD outside!

This was the temprature when I left for work tonight!

Fresh paint

We painted the wall in the living room on Super Bowl Sunday with the help of our friends Mark and Kim. Also in the picture is a frog that was her late Grandma's.

New Friends

So I get home from work this evening and am getting dinner going with mom on the phone when all of a sudden I see these two beautiful deer step out of the woods. We have seen many deer since living here, but all late at night. So this was a new thing seeing them in "prime time". I woke Greg out of a dead sleep to see them!! They are so beautiful and very calming to watch. While we were watching a third deer, much smaller, stepped out of the woods to join them. It was almost as if the two bigger ones were making sure the coast was clear! We hope that this is a common occurrence around the "ponderosa".

And the house work continues...

The cats were helping with work around the house the other day, the way they always do. Right in between you and what ever your working on. There has been more times than we can even count that they were covered in paint from them wanting to be close and right there that they brush up against, lay down right against or the swishing of their tail touches the freshly painted wall. So I was setting the new toilet in the half bath and right on cue they were all there together and in rotation following every move. So of course the install takes much longer than it should to try to keep them out of everything as well as to capture a few pictures of their curiosity.

Here Maya is doing a thurough inspection of the bowl.

Oscar and Maggie checking out the water quality.

P.S. The water really tastes good in a new and un-used bowl!

So this morning on my way in to work, this is what the temperature read.....

That's right!! Can you believe it? I have lived in Michigan 9 years now and have never seen it this cold. This is actual temperature, not wind chill. All the schools in the area are closed due to extreme cold. Never heard of that one. Warnings are out everywhere concerning frostbite and hypothermia. The projected high today....a mere 7.

While this is extremely cold, I am really not complaining. Why you may ask?? Well, I really do like living in Michigan. I love seeing ALL 4 seasons. This bitter cold will only last a few days, at most a week. We get beautiful snow....and lots of it this year so far! We have mild summers, with maybe 2 weeks of really hot temps and humidity. The rest is awesome. Mild temperate spring and fall with NO humidity, its great. So I guess the morale to the story is to get the good, you have to put up with a little bad!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY LOVELY DARLING PERFECT WIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friend from far far away

Last night we had a little get together for a friend that's been "out of town" for a little while. She's been living and working in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Here is a picture of the girls back together again at least for one night...

We wish J happy and safe travels back to Nepal. We look forward to her coming home again soon.

OOOOOOHHHHHHH The Weather Outside Is...

There is 6" of fresh snow already, with no signs of letting up anytime soon!

Friday, January 9, 2009

It's 22 degrees....anyone up for a BBQ??

So it's January and guess who's grilling? Yep, we are probably the only ones in Michigan with the BBQ out amid 3 inches of snow and freezing temps (well...that is now that Dad has moved back to 'bama - he's been known to suit up and brave one for a nice juicy steak!). But you know when the craving for a nice hunk of red meat happens, you just have to go for it. I know there are dozens of places to go and get one, but there's nothing like cooking your own! It was definitely worth it. Here is a nice shot of the BBQ with the snow.
Finally we have to give a shout out to our biggest fans.....
We are fast approaching the next "winter storm" in just a few days. Maybe then we can provide snow angels for your viewing pleasure. Or better yet, maybe a Mr. and Mrs. Snowman, any other suggestions?

The Soggy Bottom Boys

I am guessing that most of you have seen the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou". If not, I highly suggest that you pick up a copy and prepare to laugh. It is some of the best work George Clooney has ever done...of course that is one woman's opinion!

Well in the movie George Clooney pairs up with two other "convicts" and they form the Soggy Bottom Boys and sing the all too familiar "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow". Well they do this dance at the end of the movie as the sing the song, and well, the Soggy Bottom Boys were at our New Year's Bash and boy did they perform. Unfortunately we were all too slow with video cameras, and quite frankly we were laughing so hard we would have never been able to keep still. So here is a picture of the Alabama "Soggy Bottom Boys". If you are ever in or around New Hope, Alabama look them up, you will be in for a treat.

By the ways boys, next time I am in town I expect a repeat performance!!!!

For all of those Local to this group, they do perform once a week at the local Mexican Restaurant in "Hampton Cove" (next to Walmart) on Tuesdays. My brother is running Karaoke for the owner. Who can blame him, he is getting paid to do something that he loves, and quite frankly is pretty darn good at. Check him out some time! (Marty - do I get a cut if attendance rises?)

First Big Project of the New Year

We were so fortunate to be able to purchase this awesome house. We are loving every minute. It was a foreclosure owned by Fannie Mae, however it was in incredible shape compared to the many others we looked at. The house features a walkout basement that was finished at one time. Apparently through the foreclosure process the hot water tank burst and the carpet that was in the basement was ruined along with the drywall in and around that immediate area. So when we purchased the house the basement needed some drywall work and flooring. Right now we are in the process of having the basement tiled with 18'' tiles. So far so good. It is going to look beautiful and I will keep updating as the progress continues.

The Pictures didn't turn out well. There was a problem with my flash. All is well now:)

A Cat with a Rat!

Ok so we are going to be better about posting. Here is the latest. We have been south for the holidays and are just getting settled back into our surroundings. It is still weird living in this house! Well our cat...the male, Oscar looked like a ragamuffin when we arrived. He looked as though he went to war with a can of aqua net and a brush and won the tease my hair contest!! What a mess!! So we have been working with him and this huge knot he had under his neck for 2 days now....this is the final result that fell off moments ago! He actually has a little bald spot where this came from.
